About this Research Topic

This Research Topic aims to provide a platform for sharing and discussing the recent progress about the manipulation of the singular optical field. An emerging vision for the future advances in modern photonics is to explore the fundamental concepts of light coherently shaped in phase, amplitude and polarization. The corresponding outcomes have been recognized to be a means leading to new technological breakthroughs in many novel applications, such as polarization sensing and imaging, particle manipulation, and optical communication. In recent years, intensive activities in the generation, manipulation, and application of optical beams containing isolated and distributed singularities have been investigated. Intrinsic properties of singular beams find novel applications in areas as diverse as microparticle manipulation, astrophysics, information technology and processing, beam and polarization shaping, microscopy, and optical testing. The goal of this Research Topic is to offer the research community a unique opportunity to present new developments in singular optics.

Publications in this Research Topic will reflect the recent trends in the singular optical field and their applications and new physics. We welcome submissions that deal with singularity in the phase, polarization, coherence or any parameters associated with the optical fields. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Fundamentals of singular optics
• Phase and polarization singularity
• Evolution of singular beams in linear and nonlinear media
• Generation, manipulation, and properties of singular beams
• Multi-dimensional spatio-temporal manipulation of singular beams
• Manipulation of optical angular momentum in a singular optical field
• Applications of singular optics

Keywords: singular optics, polarization singularity, coherence, particle manipulation, optical testing

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
